Located in eastern France, Strasbourg is the seventh largest city in the country. The entire town centre, with its rich architectural history, has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage. Strasbourg is the capital of the beautiful Alsace region, seat of the Council of Europe, the European Commission of Human Rights and the European Science Foundation and is also the meeting-place of the European Parliament. Despite this modern role, with its monumental cathedral and many burghers' houses dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, Strasbourg still retains an elegant, old world French charm.
As may be expected in France, cuisine is a way of life and Strasbourg has plenty to offer. From star-rated restaurants where gourmets gather, to local Alsatian taverns, known for their friendly, easy-going atmosphere offering traditional specialities such as sauerkraut, flambé tart, spaetzle and foie gras.
Strasbourg is also the ideal centre for exploring the Alsace region. You’ll find a wide range of fascinating landscapes with vineyards, lakes, mountains, castles and quaint villages along the River Rhine. The well-known Motor Museum draws many visitors. The Wine Route wends its way through about 170 kilometres of vineyards and wine producing areas, The Romanesque Route leads to some fine examples of Romanesque art. And the peaceful Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park is listed as a World Biosphere Reserve.
